Creative Industry in the Post-Pandemic World

What is the future for the creative industries for not just Ontario but around the world as well? As we are slowly recovering from the pandemic and downturn of the economy, what sorts of changes can we expect out of the creative industry?

A study undertaken by UNESCO in 2021 sought to discover the damages to the creative industries that were caused by the pandemic. They discovered “large job losses in the cultural and creative industries. These decreases ranged from a high of a 55% decline in the Philippines, to a 13% fall in New Zealand.” (UNESCO, 2021, p. 21) In the reading “Ontario in the Creative Age” we learned that implementation and progression of creativity in Ontario’s economy will be necessary for future growth. While the reading points to examples of weaknesses in pursuit of these changes, the recent events of the pandemic surely will cause an even greater issue moving forward. It seems at this point that it will take a drastic (all or nothing) change for the creative process to ignite in Ontario, as we not only have to deal with barriers with our economy, and culture, but also the barriers brought about by the aftermath of the pandemic.

Questions: What do you want to see happen to creative type jobs in the future, especially after the pandemic?

Do you agree that creativity oriented jobs are the future for Ontario? Could there be problems if Ontario was mostly creative based economy?

  1. If I had to give my opinion I would like for creative jobs to get more funding and start-up help in the future. As the creative industry has been growing in the last few years I think the funding should grow too considering. Most creative work you see now are in a form of entertainment almost as if the artist has been bought out or sold out. If their was more funding I would believe a lot of people would continue with their creative art without being forced to do it at a very high business level since art is supposed to be creative and expressive not what would be trendy and popular.

  2. Great post and interesting study! I definitely agree that the pandemic has drastically changed the creative industries. I remember in another Communications course, we discussed how Waterloo was trying to become a Creative City (in terms of architecture and jobs) to increase the creative presence in the region. In supporting the creative industries post covid, I think each city should implement this through funding, events, and support for what this industry has lost. For example, The Region of Waterloo could partner with local talent and create a “Family Entertainment Night". This would help increase attendance and support for these creative industries. I think the one benefit of Covid was people were home all the time, where they could have picked up a new interest (ie. painting). Perhaps, if cities had more support for the creative industries, this could lead to new businesses and employment,

  3. Great post! This was a very interesting read and I found it especially relevant to today in the world and the class. I definitely agree that jobs today, especially creative led jobs are drastically changing for the worst, as less positions become available with the pandemic and the shift to networked work and networked organizations, I would love to see a change in the creative job sector and an increase in the creative work environment and creations of jobs. As I would like to eventually work within a creative industry one day, I think that corporations need to become prepared and able to deal with the incoming influx of graduates and job openings as more and more people come into the job scene and work within creative industries. I think that funding is a massive contributing factor to these start-ups and artists who are working within a creative industry as many of these artists are not given proper funding and therefore are unable to continue working within these creative industries.

  4. This was a great post and I definitely think that the pandemic and recent state of the country has not been helpful to the creative industries. However, as you mentioned the creative industries in Canada have already faced many barriers aside from the pandemic. It has been an issue for a while that jobs in this sector have not been given appropriate attention and I think the pandemic created a situation where this was just more apparent and visible to everyone. What I would like to see happen for creative jobs in the future is for them to be taken and treated just as seriously as other jobs in other sectors this could include things such as set wages for jobs that do not currently have that and this leads to the point that other people have mentioned which is overall more funding. I don't know if creative jobs are the entire future of Ontario but they are definitely a large part, especially with the influx of younger people now wanting a career in the industry. Because of that, I think that it should be treated and tended to just as any other large job industry.
